Healthier Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 3/4 c. organic unbleached un-enriched all natural white flour (Hodgson Mill brand is good - available at
Walmart)
1/2 c. organic whole wheat flour (Hodgson Mill brand is good - available at Walmart)
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. coarse sea salt
1/2 c. organic unsweetened applesauce
1/2 c. Earth Balance buttery spread (available at Whole Foods or other natural food stores. You can also
use Smart Balance but it’s not as healthy)
1/2 c. white sugar (can also use 1/2 c. xylitol sweetener - healthier than white sugar - see below)
3/4 c. organic Sucanat (available at Whole Foods or other natural food stores; some mainline stores carry
it also)
2 tsp. vanilla
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
Optional: ½ c. chopped walnuts or almonds
1/4 c. ground flax seeds
Set oven to 375 degrees.
Mix flours, baking soda and sea salt (and optional ground flax seed) – set aside.
Mix applesauce, butter spread, sugar, sucanat and vanilla in large bowl.
Add dry ingredients to wet mixture, mix in chocolate chips and nuts.
Drop by teaspoonfuls and bake on greased cookie sheet for 9 minutes. Makes 2 ½ to 3 dozen.
Note: I started with the traditional Toll House cookie recipe and went to work on making it healthier.... The
organic unbleached all-natural white flour is a substitute for unhealthy, bleached all-purpose flour, the
whole wheat flour adds some whole grains, the applesauce is a substitute for 1/2 of the butter, the Earth
Balance is low in saturated fats and high in healthy unsaturated/Omega 3 fats, the Sucanat is natural sugar
cane, which retains it's vitamins and minerals and is a substitute for unhealthy, processed brown sugar. I
cut the chocolate chips in half and the white sugar by a third from the traditional recipe and the cookies
were still very sweet. You can add walnuts for extra Omega 3 fats (and you can even ad 1/4 c. ground flax
seeds for extra fiber and Omega 3's) if you'd like to. Xylitol all natural sweetener can be substituted for the
white sugar, and is healthier for you. Xylitol has 40% less calories than sugar and has 0 carbs.
