Sorting through all of the nutritional products on the market –
how do I choose one that will be effective for me?
We’re often asked to give our opinion on the effectiveness of a particular nutritional product on the market.  It seems like
just about every product has a testimonial or a claim about some healing property but how do we know that it actually
works and lowers our risk of disease?    When evaluating a product or supplement, here are the questions that we
suggest you ask and have answered to your satisfaction before you make your decision:

1.        First and foremost, what research has been done on the product that shows that the product actually produces
the results that it claims to?
For example, a product might claim to boost your immune system.   You would want to ask
the manufacturer to provide clinical research results that prove this claim to be true.  If they can’t provide it, that should be a
“red flag” to you.

2.        Second, is the research that has been done “reference research” or was the research done using the actual
product that you’re evaluating?
Many companies use an approach called “reference research” which is taking research
done on ingredients contained in the product and concluding that the product itself must be effective because ingredients
contained in the product are effective.  This very well may be true but also may not be true based on the interactions that
specific ingredients have with each other in the total product formula.    To be 100% sure that the product is going to be
effective, you want to look for products where the research has been done
on the product itself.

3.        Based on the research, is the product effectively getting into your bloodstream?  “Bioavailability” or absorption
into the bloodstream is essential for a nutritional product to be effective.  Many times, vitamin supplements and nutritional
products pass directly through your body without being absorbed by the body resulting only in expensive urine.    When
contacting a manufacturer about their product research, be sure to ask to see their bioavailability studies.

4.        Does your body need the supplement that you’re thinking of buying?   Many times people buy supplements for
vitamin and mineral deficiencies they don’t have just an insurance policy “in case” their body might be deficient.   This
approach can result in spending money on products that your body doesn’t need that just get expelled by your system, or
even worse, create vitamin toxicity and higher risk of certain diseases.  Know what your body really needs before you buy!
